The Little Dipper is an asterism formed by seven bright stars in the constellation Ursa Minor, the Little Bear. The asterism has historically played an important role in navigation because it includes Polaris, the North Star. In Greek mythology Ursa Minor is Arcas, the son of Zeus and the maiden Callisto (Ursa Major). Arcas and Callisto were changed into bears and placed in the sky by Zeus in order to be protected from his jealous wife Hera.
